PORTSMOUTH — More than a month after opening its inaugural season with a win over Unity College, the Great Bay Community College women's basketball team is in need of reinforcements.

According to coach Allyson Britton, they're on the way.

The Herons, playing without standout point guard Markey Flewelling — a Portsmouth native who was recently lost for the season with the fourth ACL tear of her basketball career — were shorthanded and overwhelmed on Sunday against the reigning champions of the Yankee Small College Conference.

Mookie Kennedy scored 30 points, Arreonte Anderson had 18 and College of St. Joseph was mostly in cruise control in a 68-21 win.

Eleven of Great Bay's points were scored by freshman Monique Dandridge, who came up limping after rolling an ankle in the second quarter.

She returned after a timeout. Given the amount of healthy bodies the Herons had on Sunday, she didn't have much of a choice.

"We'll figure it out," Britton said. "We have some girls who are definitely coming in to transfer. Super excited about that. So we'll look like a different team in January."

They'll move on without Flewelling, their leading scorer who's about to rehab through the fourth knee surgery since her freshman year of high school at Winnacunnet.

"She's such a great kid and she's got big plans for the rest of the year," Britton said. "She'll succeed doing whatever she wants to do. She's got that ambition. It's not like she's hurt and now she's going to crawl under a rock. You'll see her around."

Nicole Marrero (Dover) and Jordyn Cronen (Kittery, Maine) each scored four points for the Herons (6-5), who struggled mightily against St. Joseph's pressure without their best ball handler. Ashley Lambert (Farmington) had the team's only other bucket.

"We have a winning record going into break," Britton said. "I couldn't ask for more for a new program."
